I have never used apple products, but I am considering purchasing an apple ipad for college. Any opinions?

by Admin on August 25, 2010

I am a senior in college and I am trying to purchase a new computer. I need a reliable one that works well with class work, but also will be useful technologically as well. I am torn between an apple ipad and a Sony Vaio. I need something practical that will fit my current lifestyle, yet will be useful when I am in the workforce.
Thank you for all of your help. I will research more on laptops now.

An iPad is not a PC – it is a handheld tablet. In order to get it to sync correctly, you really need a iMac or MacBook Pro. You can use it on its own but it really isn’t meant to be used as a PC on its own.
The Sony Vaio is a high performance notebook and will be useful later on.

My suggestion is to get a Dell or HP as a custom build that way you can enhance it to your needs for a much better price than a Vaio. It’s much more budget friendly and has everything that you could need later on. As a recent college graduate, the last thing you want is more debt when you get out of college.

IPad has no USB and no Flash support.

That means that any flash drive, external mouse or hard drive, and many internet pages, just won’t work for you. The IPad is mainly for showing off and dicking around with.

Get the Vaio.

The iPad would make a nice doorstop. The sony would have much more practicality about it.

I don’t own an iPad but it looks like a pain to type on and you have to look down all the time to look at the screen. So I personally would not get it. Unless if it has an external keyboard, which would be a hassle.

An iPad DOES NOT replace a laptop. It can’t do half the stuff even a cheap laptop can, so if you are thinking of getting one, you’d better be very sure it does what you need it to.

Wow… do yourself a favour and spend the money on a REAL laptop.
dont get me wrong, i LOVE apple. but the ipad was a dissapointment. if i were you, id spend those 800 on an unlocked 32 GB iphone 4. (unlocked means you can use it with any carrier) and 32 GBs is ALOT of memory

You don’t want to be using an iPad for college. It’s better you get a Mac laptop. The iPad although very nice looking and can do some basic tasks like surfing the net or emailing and some simple document processing, it will get you into trouble when it comes to printing and installing programs made for the Mac snow leopard.

iPad can’t do:

1. Print (at least not yet, maybe when ios4 releases for iPad)
2. Run programs made for the Mac operating system (you might run into trouble if a class requires you to purchase software for Mac)
3. Play cd’s, cd-roms, DVDs or DVD-roms because it has no drive or or USB connections.
4. A way to transfer or save files to memory stick for use on another computer again because the iPad has no USB support.

Conclusion the iPad is just used for surfing the Internet, playing games, emailing and basic document processing.
